Google maps, more offline capabilities to get?

Google maps, the stupid good and free map service from big search engine in the cloud, well a major further development always: maps offline access.
Google maps now offers a cached version of his cards - by an Android update and only for selected locations - but it looks like this could be arranged and actually enable the search for new map destinations without the need for a data connection.

This is some TomTom and Garmin already offers, but they do this for a premium. If Google would offer this would then it offers the same kind of functionality in the Nokia maps, which comes with selected Nokia mobile phones, and are already installed on many HTC phones.
And if offline maps offered, there is no reason Google could something, each GPS manufacturer with fear shake make not his navigation service would add.
